Programmable Hearing Aid
The word 'programmable' or 'digital' as a prefix to hearing aids is now widely used. To explain the programmable hearing aid, one has to consider the audiogram report of the patient. The graph has the audio frequency and the gain (in dB) as the two parameters. This graph is used to tune or program a programmable or digital hearing aid. These hearing aids have special trimmers, which can be tuned to boost only those frequencies in which the patient is deficient. This enables the patient to hear as close to normal hearing as possible.

Programmable hearing aids are dispensed in the form of the BTE (behind the ear), ITE (in the ear), ITC (in the canal), or CIC (completely in the canal). Wearing these hearing aids, a person will not have to hear the amplified sounds of the frequencies he is already hearing well. Only those frequencies where he is deficient will be boosted or amplified for his comfort and ultimate listening pleasure. Naturally these hearing aids are more costly than the conventional hearing aids, but more people are opting to spend the extra money get an instrument which is aspiring for technical perfection.
